BIOGRAPHY
In 1995 Narqath and Kalma formed a band called Belfegor. Somewhere in the beginning of 1997, Varjoherra and Kalma united their dark mindsand they changed the name to Nargoventor . At the same time, Narqath had released a few demos under the names of; Valar, Wolfheart and With hate I burn. Some of these demos had got fairly good response, so Narqath offered himself as a bass-player for Nargoventor.

They also changed the name to Azaghal. Line-up also changed: Varjoherra-Vocals, Narqath -Guitars, Add.vocals, bass Kalma: Drums.
In January 1998 they recorded their first demo under the name of Azaghal, simply called Reh.demo /98. Just a few months after that they entered the Cursed-studio to record their first official demo, Noituuden Torni. Aftermath Music(Norway) offered a deal for a 7" EP. "Harmagedon"-EP was released in February 1999. It sold 500 copies and is now sold out.

Some time after the releasing of the EP, Melancholy Promotions(GRE) contacted Azaghal and offered a deal for a full-lenght release. "Mustamaa"(Mordor) LP was recorded in two different sessions. The LP was limited to 300 copies. Almost right after the releasing of the LP, Evil Horde rec.(BRA) offered Azaghal a deal for two full-lenght albums. The first full-lenght CD "Helvetin Yhdeksan Piiria" was released in early 2000.
Then ISO666 released the "Mustamaa" material on CD after big demand.
INTERVIEW
1) PERKELE NARQATH! HOW IS FINLAND TODAY? HEARD FROM JAPE (ETERNAL TEARS OF SORROW) THAT IT IS RAINING! IS THAT A FACT?
Perkele to you too Evildark.. I dunno when you interviewed Jape, but today it has been a very sunny and warm day. the sun is just setting and the sky looks really quite nice at the moment.

2)IS NARQATH A TOLKIEN BASED NICK NAME LIKE AZAGHAL IS? WHY CHOOSE TOLKIEN TITLES IF THY LYRICAL CONTEXT AND GENERAL PROPAGANDA IS SATANIC? ISN`T THIS A CONTRADICTION?
Narqath does not mean anything. It`s just a name. We chose the name Azaghal because we coudn't come up with anything more original at the time and we had to print some name to the demo covers.. We used to be called Belfegor in the past but as it well known there is already band called Belfegor in Austria. Anyway, Azaghal is a good sounding name. "Mustamaa" can also be translated into "Darkland" or "Blackland", but Mordor is basicly the same thing. Anyway, the lyrics really have nothing to do with Tolkien on that song either.. It's just our vision of a blackland / mordor.

3)YOUR SECOND ALBUM "HELVETIN YHDEKSAN PIIRIA" CONTAINS ALMOST TOTALLY RE - RECORDED MATERIAL. HOW COME?
Because we were satisfied with the songs, but not with the earlier versions of them. And besides, all the old songs on that album are orignally from some very limited demo or 7" so I don't think many people have heard them before. And the new versions are superior when compared to the old, don't you agree?

4) WHICH ARE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN YOUR EARLY MATERIAL AND THE LATEST ONES?
"Mustamaa" being the most primitive of them all.

5) I KNOW THAT YOU DIDN`T GET THE BEST TREATMENT AFTER ACHIEVING RECOGNITION, FROM THE REST OF THE FINNISH SCENE! HOW COME? JEALOUSY? WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YOUR SCENE?
I think people were pissed off because we made a lot jokes about their precious scene and basicly called almost everyone else shit haha. Black Metal is a very mistanthropic music anyway so I couldn't care less what everyone else in the scene thinks about us our about our music. We'll see in the future, who'll vanish and who'll still be here creating Black Terror Metal!

6) WHICH BANDS WERE MORE INFLUENTIAL TO YOU? IF SOMEONE LISTENS TO SOME OF YOUR PROJECTS HE CAN CLEARLY DETECT SOME INFLUENCES BUT I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR THEM FROM YOUR MOUTH!
I have never tried to hide my influences.. The most influental bands considering my song writing have been Darkthrone & old Satyricon (the early days of Azaghal), Marduk, Abigor, Opeth ("Nine Circles of Hell" era Azaghal and new material) Summoning & Pazuzu (quite clearly heard in Valar material ehem.), and I think Hin Onde could best be compared to Thyfing, Cruachan and maybe Borknagar, altough non of these bands (with maybe the exception of Cruachan) has not influenced my song writing in anyway.

7) A LOT OF BANDS HATE MANKIND AND HUMANITY BUT THAT`S NOT A FACT AS THEY ARE RATHER SOCIAL. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT? ISN`T THE SCENE NOWADAYS MORE OF AN IMAGE AND NOTHING MORE? HOW ARE YOU IN YOUR NORMAL LIFE? BLACK AND HATEFUL AS THE WOLF THAT STANDS ALONE IN THE ENDLESS DARK OR WHITE AS THE FINNISH WINTER SNOW THAT LIES ON THE MOUNTAINS HIGH... SORRY...
I'm definetly not a social person. In fact last weekend was the first time I went to a bar in over a year. I had to quit my job too because I couldn't stand all the idiots that worked there... I lost my mind there completely! So now I'm unemployed again which means a lot more time to cocentrate on music writing again. I don't really know or care about if other bands are "for real" or not. If the music's good that's enough for me.
